McGee March Madness - Stephanie Lewis's Essay I think that the money raised should go to CRPS research because CRPS (Complex Regional Pain Syndrome) is a chronic pain disease. The symptoms of this disease include
pain when you touch the place where you have it, it feels like someone is sticking knives
into you and it never stops hurting. CRPS is more likely to affect girls than boys. While
nearly 7 million people suffer from CRPS alone in the United States, remains poorly
understood and is often misdiagnosed. Some symptoms are extreme sensitivity to touch,
purple and red coloring in pain area and burning pain. Today treatment includes;
controlling and minimizing pain to the greatest extent possible and restoring function to
CRPS-affected limb.
Why donate money to CRPS research? I have CRPS! Living with CRPS has made
normal activates hard like sleeping with the covers on, taking a shower, walking up and
down the stairs and maybe never playing sports again. Pain is 24 hours a day and even
with pain pills it never stops. The pain has caused me to only attended school for half
days and the reason is that the pain is so much that it is hard to focus on my schoolwork. In addition, you loose friends because they do not believe you, or you are just not able to
go out to go to the movies or have sleepovers because of the pain. I go to therapy
everyday because that is one of the treatments for it and when I am done with therapy, I
am wiped out so I am not able to do things after therapy. In addition, the affects of the
pain medicate ion makes me tired and drowsy and not sleeping at night does not help. My
life as I live with this is hard but everyday I look for the good side of having this disease as hopefully fmding a cure.
Getting more money going to CRPS research will allow scientist to try to fmd cures and
answer question such as why do some people get iIliured and recover completely, well
other are left with chronic pain the never stops. Knowing more about CRPS will help
doctors prevent kids from getting CRPS in the future. In addition, doctors do not know a
lot about this disease so they are trying to understand more about the disease and find
ways to prevent it and to cure it. The money will help find a cure for me and a couple
other kids in our town that have it and we will be very thankfully for it.
This disease is different from other disease and sickness because this is invisible.
People do not know that you are hurting because they do not see a cast, crutch or a
wheelchair. Having this is hard because it is hard for people to understand this and do not know how to help and come forward with it.
Thank you so much for letting me have this opportunity to talk about this disease
and letting more people know about it. If you pick my essay, I will be very gratefully and the money will not go to waste.
